PRT 4828-The Senior Internship
As the final learning scenario in the PRT program, students are tasked with obtaining a full-time position in the parks, recreation, and tourism field as an internship where they are required to work 480 hours between 12-14 weeks. I completed my internship at the Cottonwood Heights Recreation Center as the Aquatic Coordinator for the Aquatics Department. I was in charge of hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating 110 lifeguards, shift supervisors, and aquatic site supervisors, as well as provide support to the Aquatic Programs Coordinator and her aquatic instructors. I was also tasked with creating a portion of the Aquatics Department 2018 budget, implementation of American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Courses, and the preparation of the outdoor pool for the winter and a multi-million dollar construction project that will increase the size of the diving tank and build a new diving structure.

- Goal 1: I will be able to manage an operating budget for an aquatic department by the end of my internship.
- Objective 1: I will create a yearly operating budget by August 31st of the year prior to which the budget will be used, in a format that is easily understood without explanation to my manager or any future Coordinators in my position.
- Objective 2: I will check the previous yearly budget quarterly to ensure that the section of the department under my supervision is within the approved budget.
- Goal 2: I will be able to manage personnel for all department needs for any aquatics department that I work for in the future.
- Objective 1: I will work with my manager to ensure I have interviewed and hired enough applicants that my employees will have as many hours as they are able to comfortably work while keeping their hours under the federally mandated 1500 hour cap for non-benefitted employees.
- Objective 2: I will immediately resolve personnel issues by speaking with employees privately and without drawing unnecessary attention from coworkers or patrons within 2 business days of the personnel issue.
